I’ve been thinking a lot about how seasonal SLO County really is, especially for small businesses that depend on tourism. When things slow down, what actually keeps the lights on?
Living in North County, it feels like businesses open with momentum and then quietly disappear a year or two later. That got me wondering whether we’re leaving obvious revenue on the table during the off-season.
I’ve been looking at a lot of local business websites and I’m honestly surprised how few offer any kind of digital extension. No subscriptions, no simple e-commerce, no way to stay connected with customers once foot traffic drops off. It feels like most sites stop at “here’s our hours and phone number” and that’s it.
Almost any business has something they could offer online that provides ongoing value. Education, memberships, seasonal products, local perks, even small recurring services. Yet very few seem to explore it.
Maybe there are good reasons this doesn’t work for certain businesses, and if so I’d genuinely like to hear them. Or maybe it’s just not something most owners have time or support to think about.
Not trying to sell anything here, just curious how other local business owners handle the slow months and whether digital revenue streams have helped, or why they haven’t.
